The skills of negotiating, project planning, presenting, adjusting to changing conditions, and writing reports are all needed in the workplace, but often are not sufficiently taught to undergraduate engineers. At Cal State LA, our students complete their senior year ready to hit the ground running in a business environment. Senior Living communities today must provide a higher-caliber level of amenities and interiors to satisfy increasingly savvy residents. Fundamental designs related to daily services are evolving to improve the user experience. An exceptional senior living community should feel, to its residents, like home.

Teams who have senior UX designers can more easily unify product and engineering personnel behind a product design that caters to target audiences. This could result in a product that performs well with users, making senior UX designers crucial contributors to customer retention and business success. There’s no getting around this one, but it’s deeper than just being able to produce really good designs.

By making mechanical testing more affordable at just under $400, this solution aims to increase the accessibility and availability of testing resources within the department. The objective of this project is to develop a vibration absorber for Morgan Hall North to reduce the structural vibrations the building experiences during wind-induced loading. To address this problem, we developed two tuned liquid column dampers to increase the overall damping the building experiences under its first mode of vibration. By increasing the damping of the structure, a reduction in perceivable vibrations occurs, improving both occupant safety and comfort levels in the building. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the tuned liquid column dampers, a 1/50 scaled model was built to represent Morgan Hall North, with tuned liquid column dampers 3D printed and installed on the roof of the structure.
Then, a 3D model of the bone is created using geometric data from micro-CT scans (minimum moment of inertia) from actual rodent bone samples. Once the standards are printed and tested, the results can be used to calculate the stiffness of the standard, for comparison to the properties of the real bone samples. Project sponsors provide a meaningful and challenging project for students to solve a specific real-world need or technical problem. A small team of students dedicates 1200 hours over the academic year to meet the project deliverables.
We will create a reference sample of normal concrete and compare those results to the samples created with the carbon nanofibers. This will help solve the given problem and give us a better understanding of which concrete sample is more effective.
Poseidon Systems is a company that specializes in real-time fluid diagnostics technology. The sensors that Poseidon develops are primarily used in industrial machinery to test oil quality and levels. Poseidon’s current wireless oil quality sensor, the Trident LH2600, uses Bluetooth 5.0 that lacks the range to get across longer plants. Our goal is to develop a board that can record and transmit sensor data over LoRaWAN, taking advantage of a long range/low power network.
The Industry Review Panel meets at the end of Cpr E/Cyb E/E E/S E 492, to evaluate the final prototypes, as well as the design process, and to provide constructive criticism to the Senior Design Committee.
